Changing years with a fixed focus
Continuing to integrate across traditional academic disciplines, the Middle School curriculum for Grades 4-8 is an immersion into collaboration and affirmation. With small class sizes, advisory groups, and learning specialists, there is as much attention paid to the student as to the education.

The goal of the middle school (grades four through eight) is to provide a rigorous academic curriculum that fosters individual student achievement. In focusing equally on the student and her learning, the middle school supports The Hewitt School's mission of providing a challenging program while encouraging independent thinking.

The structure of the middle school is designed to aid students in their transition from the lower school classroom and to prepare them to enter the upper school. The program in the middle school is academically demanding, coherently connected, and personally relevant. English, history, mathematics, science, foreign language, physical education, and creative arts classes are offered to all students. The library and technology resources enrich and enhance the overall curriculum. The integrated curriculum allows for independent work, group projects, and research, enabling the students to think critically and creatively. In addition, academic classes, organizations such as athletic teams, student council, the literary magazine, and other clubs allow students to explore their individual talents. Grades seven and eight are combined into a mini-division within the middle school to provide a gradual transition into the upper school. There is an emphasis on organization, study strategies, and leadership.

And so much more that can't be measured
A dozen sports teams and a "no-cut" sports policy ensure that any student who wants to play, can. The emphasis of our complete physical, nutritional, and health instruction is always on understanding the issues and the consequences of different decisions. 'Tactics' classes teach effective learning strategies. 'Life Skills' classes teach ethical behavior and taking responsibility for one's actions. And the school itself - libraries, labs, teachers, students, stairwells and hallways - become a backdrop for the student to put all she's experiencing into action.
