    Hewitt School Profile

Community service is an integral part of every student’s education at Hewitt. The school is firmly committed to helping students become responsible and conscientious citizens and to building their knowledge of and commitment to the community.

The lower school program is based on the model of service learning; therefore, service is incorporated into various aspects of the school’s academic curriculum. The entire lower school participates in several activities throughout the year to raise the girls’ awareness of the needs of the communities which surround them.

In the middle school, the community service program is part of the students’ daily life. Each grade has a placement site which the girls visit three times a year during the school day. These sites consist of senior homes, Meals on Wheels, Yorkville Common Pantry, and other nearby facilities. All middle school students are required to complete ten hours of community service over the course of the school year. In addition to working in the community, students in the middle school run the school’s recycling program.

Each student in the upper school is required to complete twenty hours of service per year. At least ten of these hours must be completed outside of school doing activities such as Meals on Wheels or working at Yorkville Common Pantry. Students may fulfill five of their hours serving the Hewitt community and five hours participating in a fundraising run or walk.
